Chapter 7

Walker was as nervous as a barefoot blind man in a room full of tacks. Dressed in a uniform which would allow him to blend in on Borrus as one of the many dignitaries that congregated there, and the snowsuit Raine had purchased for him, he paced by her side, his hood keeping him hidden. She had said they would be leaving on a transport an acquaintance of hers owned, but they had to walk through the trading station to reach the launch pad.

For a brief moment, he allowed himself to take stock of where he stood with Raine. He’d taken a grave risk forcing her to swear the night before, but he’d been lucky. It had paid off. With her agreement to include him in all her decisions, he had moved one step closer to binding her mind to him. She would now need to factor him into everything she did. Her body was already locked to his. He thought he might have woven some small threads between their hearts as well. He’d caught something in her eyes that told him she cared about him, both last night and when he’d broken his leg.

Walker sighed and forced himself to concentrate on his surroundings. He had a week left before they reached Borrus to work on her.

Inter-world Council troops marched between warming huts spaced around the station. His stomach tightened as they walked past them. He didn’t want to be caught now that he had found his mate. He’d reached a point during his stay in HeFO when he’d just wanted to die, but now he wanted to live. With Raine. He touched his gloved hand to Raine’s waist and smiled at her when she glanced his way.

They passed through an archway and spilled out to the launch pad. Raine guided them between transports until they arrived at one in the back corner.

“Trond,” she said, flipping off her hood and extending her arm.

She didn’t smile, and Walker had the feeling she didn’t like the man, even though they shook hands.

“I thought you weren’t gonna show, Stormy Weather.” The man laughed, a huffing sound that matched his scarred and distorted face. He’d been born with one side wider than the other. Things had gone from bad to worse after that. Someone had carved him up on both cheeks, leaving raised white scars.

“We had to drive in this morning. It took longer than I had anticipated.”

Raine didn’t lie exactly. They had driven in, but they had also sold the Snow-doo and her icehouse. When he’d asked her why, she informed him she wasn’t coming back to Sector 9. One way or another, she would live or die someplace else.

“Guess the weather held you up.” He glanced at Walker. “Who you?”

“Does it matter?” Raine asked him, bringing Trond’s gaze back to hers. “We leaving now?”

“Yes.” He waved them into the transport. “My co-pilot is sick with a hangover, so you probably won’t see him this trip.”

“Hold!” A guard marched towards them. “I need to see papers if you’re leaving.
